Requiring undergraduate students to attend all or a majority of classes undercuts their ability develop and function as mature, independent learners, argues the author. It explores the idea of ‘learnerism’ and how this may erode away at the ability of students to learn in different ways – for example those who learn from silence as well as discussion – and suggests that creating a learning environment students want to be in is more successful overall than forcing them to participate.

    Re Flipping the job search: Common sense, really, although perhaps a frightening prospect for the majority of job-seekers.

    Finding quality employees is exceedingly difficult, and most job-seekers are practiced at addressing the typical job requirement questions without actually being motivated enough, dedicated enough or even capable of performing the role to a satisfactory level. Few job seekers understand what kind of people make up the team they are applying to join, and whether they’ll fit in.

    Flipping the process enables employers to actively respond (whether that be in the job interview process, or during an initial employee seek stage) to individuals who are looking for a certain environment that will result in the best outcome for both parties.

    If more people were willing to be honest to themselves about who they are and how they are motivated, and following that, what they expect from an employer, then more position/applicant matches might occur, resulting in stability beoming more of a norm within the average workforce.
